www.frieda.co.za

I bought this ring from Frieda Luehl in Windhoek, Namibia during her exhibition in December 2006, and still LOVE IT! Frieda is from Namibia but is living in Cape Town currently. She shares a studio with some other jewellers at Roodebloem Road #34. My mom and I visited the studio last year for a few christmas presents, and needless to say we had to buy ourselves some pressies too! So check out her website, http://www.frieda.co.za/ but the studio is sooooo much better, because you can try the pieces on!

peter stutchbury

Ok, I have to make a small confession:

Peter Stutchbury is the reason why I applied for the Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class!

Ok there, now you know! = ) Last year at the architecture film festival held at Cavendish Square I went and saw a 25min short film on Peter Stutchbury and his work, and I WAS INSPIRED! It was just a very small but really powerful reminder of why I am an architect. I felt like a student again, and the passion I have for architecture was re-awakened, as I think it was hibernating for a while... So needless to say that I am exstatic that Peter is one of the tutors for the master class! Unfortunately I could not get hold of too many downloadable images on the net so here are a few. And if you want to see more visit his website at http://www.stutchburyandpape.com.au/

The first three pics are of a working wool shed - also featured in the film - and more than pretty impressive!

glenn murcutt

Some images of Glenn Murcutt's appropriate architecture (unfortunately some of the images are a bit small).

This is where we will be staing the first week of the course!

I will post a lot more photographic footage on the return of my trip in July!

dinner & a show!

And what an experience! We went to Madame Zingara's for dinner last night, and it is all well worth it. I won't go into the history too much, as I will get it horribly wrong. But the short & long of it is that Madame Zingara use to be a restaurant in Loop Street, Cape Town. Then most of the the building got burnt sown in a fire some time in 2006 (i think...) and to date no repairs have been done. So the owner (of the restaurant) bought a fantastic tent in Germany (i think again...) with stain glass windows and bevelled glass panels - and voila! Dinner and a travelling "circus"! They started in Cape Town, went up to Johannesburg and are back in Cape Town with ... ROSARIO!
The three fat ladies signing... entertaining us through the main course. One can buy dress-up props at the kiosk inside, and clearly most patrons enjoy themselves by taking part in this whole fantasy world!
The acrobats and drag queens, the strong men and contortionists are just superb! Sjoe really super!!!
My favourite, from Berlin! (the one at the back in the white dress)
And then of course the food! It's a four course meal of delicious flavours and treats, with the all famous chilli chocolate fillet still on the menu. So if you feel like an entertaining, mind-boggling evening, book at Madame Zingara's http://www.madamezingara.com/main.php?page=0 . They are in Cape Town only 'till March, and when I booked all the Friday and Saturday shows were fully booked out! AND they support a couple of charities really generously.

Tagged... contents of my bokkie...

I have been tagged twice in a short time - so I have decided to reveal the contents of my springbok handbag on the second tag - so here goes...

In no particular order:
Sony Cybershot
Camera downloading cable
Leather purse with my ENTIRE life in it (I cannot live without my purse)
Pamphlet on Marlene Dumas Exhibition at the National Gallery
THREE note books - the black on is full (ironically) and the pink & blue ones virtually empty!
2x pens (felt-tipped, 1x black & 1x red)
2x lip-ice
1x lip gloss
Pink hair elastic
Eye drops (for my hard contact lenses)
Hayfever pills
Panadoes (don't get head aches too often, but when I get them I need my drugs!)
Mints in a convenient container with mirror (xmas gift from my cousin)
And a stray ticket stub from the Elton John concert

And this is just the main compartment of the bokkie! The zipped side compartment's contents will remain top secret! = )

SO hope you are not too shocked! As I have tagged seven people recently, I will take a break with passing this on, for now...

I am SO excited...

I have just heard that I have been accepted for the Glenn Murcutt International Master Class taking place from 05-19 July 2008 in Australia! This is so exciting and I am so so chauffed! Here are a few examples of the award-winning houses that some of the tutors have designed, and just a sneak perview of the built environments that I will be experiencing. I just cannot wait! So starting at the top the authors of the spaces are Glenn Murcutt, Peter Stutchbury & Lindsay Johnston. So now I have to start making all the necessary arrangements, as the Pope will also be in Sydney at the same time for an International Youth day, so flights will probably be very full! = ) Wish me good luck!

marlene dumas

If you can, go and check out the Marlene Dumas exhibition at Iziko in Cape Town. I think it ends this coming weekend - but don't take my word for it... It is Marlene's FIRST solo exhibition in South Africa - really shocking, seeing that she was born here and studied at Michaelis (UCT) and only thereafter went to study in the Netherlands and ended up staying there. She has exhibited world wide, including the Tate Modern!

So here are my FAVOURITES from the exhibition...
This one I just thought was BRILLIANT! Thanks Marlene I really enjoyed the exhibition!
